How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Dallas–Fort Worth?
The honest answer: it depends on the stump — but not in the hand-wavy way contractors usually mean. Stump grinding is one of the most predictable jobs in the yard-work world, and once you know the four things that set the price, you can guess your own quote within a few dollars.
The short version
In the Dallas–Fort Worth market, a single average residential stump typically lands in the low-to-mid hundreds, with small ornamental stumps costing less and big old shade trees costing more. Most companies — ours included — price per stump with a minimum service charge, since getting the machine to your address costs the same whether the stump is big or small.
What actually sets the price
- Diameter. The single biggest factor. A stump is measured at its widest point at ground level, including the flare — not the neat circle in the middle. A 10" crape myrtle and a 40" post oak are very different afternoons.
- Species. DFW grows some famously dense wood. Post oak, live oak, and bois d'arc grind slower than hackberry, mulberry, or that Bradford pear that split in the last storm.
- Access. Backyard stump behind a 36" gate? Most modern grinders fit, but tight access adds time. Front-yard stump by the curb is the cheapest kind.
- Grind depth. A standard below-grade grind (enough to mow and re-sod) is the baseline. Grinding deeper — for replanting or construction — takes more passes.
